Detech Coils
« on: June 12, 2015, 08:29:36 pm »
Hi everyone, I am new to this forum and this is my first post. However I have spoken to Woody many times about detecting.
I currently have 2 detectors with Woody, waiting for him to fit the variable frequency mod, one of them being a modified F1A4 and the other a modded GP 3500,
My question is,
Has anyone used Detech coils with modded machines and what sort of results are you getting?
I have seen on their web site that they offer some quite different styles of DD coils compared to Coilteck or Nugget Finder and I am curious to find out if they are of similar quality to Coilteck & Nugget Finder or perhaps even better.

I finally decided to buy a Detech 15 x 12 DD coil, after 2 days of detecting and fiddling with the new frequency mod fitted by Woody.
I can say that this coil works about 50% better than the wallaby 17 x 11 DD that I used to have and another freaky thing I discovered, is that I am getting the coil to discriminate in Mono mode, definitely only on one side of the coil, that means I am also getting 15 x 7 mono coil that will discriminate.
I contacted Stinky Pete and he confirmed that he has experienced the same effect, but can't say if all the DD coils will do this and also he can't say why they do it.
working Pink lead at Inglewood using discriminate mode I have found 3 .22 slugs and a 10gram piece of lead at depth and definitely not dug up before, so I am finding targets missed by others, just need gold now.

Hi all,

Woody, just a short note to say the variable frequency mod has made a huge difference to my 4500 in the field in regard to stability. I headed to familiar ground that I knew would normally need some re-tuning as I moved around. What I found however was unit just hummed away all day except of course when picking up a target. I could even crank up the front end gain and the back RX gain a little and still maintain stability.

I've just picked up the new Nugget Finder Evolution Coil which should compliment the set up further so hope to get back out there soon.

Some customers tell me they can get better results with the modded GPX than a SDC or a GPZ   but my own testing has already shown that to be the case.

Minelab has done the prospecting community a big favour keeping the GPX5000 in continued production and making available the GPX4500 as well.  The feed back on the mods has been nothing short of spectacular. So much more gold is being found from old ground with modded detectors. I find it very difficult to get customers to say much as they want to keep it a secret, i know one fellow who kept the mods secret from his detecting buddy.

Gold..... It does strage things to people..

I'm sure looking forward to getting mine back from ya, Woody! The bit of info on setting for your mods you sent me seem more geared to the 5000. I still believe the 4500 is the best Minelab made, pre7K. Where I usually hunt, I can run in normal and deep and it's smooth.
Chip when I get it, will try around home, but will contact you when going to Q.

Shep, congratulations! I know you will like the mods! I think the un modded 4500 will beat the 5000 but the mods will make them equal I think but they are both great machines no matter what. Looking forward to hooking up with you! Chip
