General Discussion / Re: GPX 6000 VS Modded 5000

Be good to hear how your testing goes with this modification.  My 5000 just keeps purring along.

Thanks Woody, that’s exactly what I was thinking also.  Also, I apologize for being so late in responding.  I have finally gotten out and have been using my modded 5000 more.  I’ve found I’m able to set to Sharp timings and adjust the frequency to lower numbers with the front gain turned up and punch threw some ground I couldn’t touch before.  Found some nice gold at depth.  It certainly isn’t missing much.

General Discussion / GPX 6000 VS Modded 5000
« on: November 15, 2021, 12:34:53 pm »
I’m wondering what the consensus is on a Modded 5000 vs the GPX 6000.  I’m wondering if the fine gold setting on the 5000 with the front gain turned up along with the frequency adjusted to a higher frequency would produce some of the same results I’m seeing from the GPX 6000 with it ability on smaller somewhat deeper gold.  Any thoughts??

Peter, hope you have been getting out more with this Covid going around. I’ve started to get more, make more, time to get out swing the coil.  The more I use my modded 500 the more I’m liking it.

Hi Wes, been a long time since I've been on here so hopefully your still out there. How did you go with the DD Coil on your modded 5000 in regard to the front end gain?

Peter

Hi Peter,  ya I’m still here, just so busy working on cars in my shop that when I come in for the night I find myself just to tired to get in online. I have actually been getting out a little more in the past few months.  I use the Detech 15 DD and the stock Minelab 11 DD in trashy areas.  I do turn up the front gain a bit.  I turn it  up until the detector starts to get a little unstable then down just enough to smooth it out.  The factory gain I keep around a 4 or 5.

Sorry it’s been forever for me to respond but life gets busy and there just hasn’t been time to get out with my modded 5000 yet.  Combine that with all the development going on in our gold fields that equates to lost access.  Hopefully by this fall I can get back out.

I agree with what Shep says.  Learn the detector in its stock form first and then have it modded.  I just got mine back from having Woody’s mods done.  Unfortunately it’s done nothing but snow and rain here since and I have not been able to try it out.  I have however had two other detectors modified by Woody and those mods improved those detectors.

Ian, you won’t be disappointed.  I just got mine back and  feel the added adjustments are going to be a great addition.

It arrived this afternoon and I did some air tests using an 11 inch Detech ultra spiral wound mono indoors.  All I can say is WOW.  Super quiet.  I use to have to use cancel inside or even near the house outside.  The depth of a 1dwt was almost 12 inches.  Variable gain and variable frequency will definitely be a plus.  Soon as it stops raining I will get out in the field with it.

I know this is an old topic but I have a question for anyone who can provide an answer.

Regarding the front end gain mod and just how far it can be tuned up -

Does the increased stability of a double D coil allow the front end gain to be set higher without incurring increased noise as would be the case with a mono?

I’m wondering the same thing.  I’m thinking the front end gain and variable frequency mods should really help pump up a DD coil if you can run a little more pumped up because of the quietness of a DD coil.  I’ll soon find out as soon as my GPX 5000 gets back here.

No , no response but I’ll know in few days.  I sent it to get the variable frequency and front end gain mods and it should be back to me in few days.

Hey Woody, just wondering if there are any additional mods for the GPX 5000 over the past 6 months or so.  Still thinking about modding my 5000 instead of spending 8 grand on a GPZ7000.

I’ve always seen improvements with the mods he’s done on my detectors.

Is this ground for testing your mods and products or for having detecting excursions/tours on?
